“I can’t help you live your dream if I’m not living mine”
THE BEST DESCRIPTION of the greenman I’ve heard is that it represents the regenerative power of nature. We could all use a little bit of that.
I’ve been doing graphic arts and advertising for 35 years, and running Greenman for nearly a decade. It had been on a sort of hiatus for a while. Life is sad and beautiful, sometimes in the same chapter.
One day I woke up and realized that chapter was finished and it was time to start a new one. It was time to go back to work.
TO BE REALLY GOOD AT WHAT YOU DO, you have to love what you do. When you get older, the distaste of doing something strictly for the money gets harder to wash away.
So much of advertising is a waste of time and money, and it just irritates people.
So instead I decided to focus on what I do best. That’s helping creative people get their story told, their stuff out there so it can make a change in the world. Even if it’s just a ripple.
It’s not just artists and musicians, it’s anyone with a small business and a big idea that sets their imagination on fire. Imagination and creativity are contagious. If you come to me excited, I’ll get excited too.
It’s the same idealism I had when I was younger, before it got squashed by the reality of the workplace.
It’s why we work for ourselves, isn’t it?
I TURNED TO TWO PEOPLE I always turn to. Todd Lane I’ve known since I was three. We’re brothers from different parents, sharing a name. He keeps me organized.
Cate Davies is my twin, born six years later and a continent away. She’s the yin to my yang and if it’s important, Cate sees it and does what needs to be done. I needed a lady’s touch around here.
And so after much deliberation, plotting and planning, we’re ready to launch this and see what happens. It feels like we’ve finally grown into our name.
